On September 8, 2025, Nepal witnessed one of the darkest chapters in its history. More than twenty members of the Gen Z generation—young students and citizens demanding justice—were killed when the government of Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, leader of the UML Communist Party, ordered security forces to open fire on peaceful protesters.
What began as an anti-corruption movement led by Gen Z activists was a call for transparency, fairness, and dignity in governance. But instead of listening to their voices, the state responded with bullets. Innocent lives were cut short, leaving the entire nation mourning and grieving the loss of its youngest and brightest.
The crackdown sparked nationwide outrage. In the days that followed, anger and frustration turned into a larger movement. Protesters stormed major government institutions, including the Supreme Court, Parliament, and other central offices, in a scene that echoed the 2006 Jana Andolan (People’s Movement). Once again, the streets of Nepal became the stage for a struggle against dictatorship and corruption.

For decades, Communist leaders have ruled Nepal in the name of democracy while misusing power for their own benefit. Instead of serving the people, they have enriched themselves and silenced dissent. The September 8 massacre is a stark reminder of their disregard for humanity, democracy, and international law. The world must recognize this as a grave violation of human rights.
The Oli government’s attempt to ban social media platforms—including Meta, Instagram, WhatsApp, and IMO—was not about national security. It was an effort to hide the lavish lifestyles and corruption of political elites while ordinary citizens struggled for survival. Influenced by external authoritarian forces, they even sought to control TikTok, bending it into a tool of propaganda rather than free expression.
But Gen Z stood united. They refused to surrender their rights to freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly. Their courage shook the foundations of an unjust system. The sacrifice of these martyrs has already written a new chapter in Nepal’s history—one of resistance, unity, and the demand for justice.
As a social activist, I, Sonam Ghising, join my voice with millions of Nepalis and demand justice. Communist K.P. Oli and his government must be held accountable including Prachanda a living dictator who is responsible for killing 17000 innocents citizens of Nepal . No one is above the law. The families of the victims deserve justice, and the world must not remain silent. The United Nations and the international community must act, ensuring that those responsible for this massacre face trial.
History has already shown us the cost of unchecked dictatorship: leaders like Dictator Prachanda, who oversaw the killing of over 17,000 during the 2006 conflict, remain unpunished. This cycle of impunity must end.
The people of Nepal demand justice. The voices of Gen Z will not be silenced. The martyrs of September 8 will forever remind us that freedom, dignity, and democracy must be defended—even against the most ruthless of rulers.
Justice delayed is justice denied. Murderers must not walk free. The world is watching, and the people are rising.
